Influencers

TikTok has created a new breed of popular creators - one where almost anyone can be one. With the way the algorithm works, you never know who could be the next big TikToker. What’s interesting about TikTok is that almost any user can have a video go viral. The algorithm works in mysterious ways, and any random user’s video could be shown to millions of people if the cogs click into place. This can cause average users to gain thousands of followers with one video on the “For You” page.

Some have called the way TikTok operates a “fame factory,” creating stars out of average people on the daily. It would be fair to say that there are a fair number of new influencers that have risen out of TikTok, but it is as easy to gain the fame as it is to lose it. One viral video does not guarantee a influencer career.

There are some users that rise above a couple thousand, though, and have gained millions of followers on TikTok. Some of these influencers have gained so much popularity that it bleeds out of TikTok and into greater society. One of these influencers is Charli D’Amelio, a 15-year-old who is most known for her dance TikToks. Charli has more than 50 million followers on TikTok, and even appeared in a Sabra hummus commercial during the Super Bowl.

Another popular TikToker who also appeared in that star filled Sabra hummus commercial is “Kombucha Girl” Britney Broski, who has almost 4 million TikTok followers.

Charli is a member of the Hype House, an infamous TikToker collective located in Los Angeles. The Hype House is similar to what some YouTube stars have created - it is an expensive mansion dedicated to famous TikTokers who want to grow their careers by creating TikToks together. With about 20 members, the Hype House TikTokers work off of each other’s popularity to create better videos. It’s like a reality TV show where “all of your favorite” TikTok stars post about their lives together.
