Culture

With more than 700 million active daily users, TikTok has created an extremely unique community with its own cultural etiquette. It has crafted new sayings, styles, and trends that are centrally embedded in the lives of its mainly young (and impressionable) audience. It has become a platform for the new generation of content consumers and creators to express themselves freely, perfecting their own version of social media.

Community is a big part of TikTok, with videos being created around other users trends, challenges, and content. There are even different genres of users created, like e-boys and girls, VSCO girls, and country TikTokers. Each of these groups have their own personalities and styles, and develop based off of content from other users in the community.

TikTok has it’s own jokes, it’s own memes, it’s own trends. Things that make sense to fellow TikTokers but might sound extremely odd to outsiders. And that’s how they like it! Users feel like they are part of a secret club, a club where only the cool kids understand what’s going on.

The trends found on TikTok allow for new users to easily start posting on the platform. They make it easy for users to craft a video without having to think of a completely creative and new idea. They also make the user feel like they are a part of something bigger - like they are truly a member of the TikTok community.

Users can comment on and like other people’s videos, but it is also easy to share videos within and outside of TikTok. Videos can be sent to other users in the app through a direct messaging system, or they can be sent via almost any other conceivable fashion: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, iMessage, Snapchat, etc. They can even be saved into the user’s phone for even more versatile exposure. Videos sent via outside formats are watermarked with the TikTok logo and the username of the creator, which is a great way to limit content theft while enticing viewers to download the app.
